A friend called Friday night to ask if I wanted some pheasants. Of course I said yes. They shoot both hens and roosters for dog training so I already have a couple of hen skins preserved when he gave me these birds. I use them for soft hackles mostly. I decided to just pluck these birds into the trash can. As I was pulling off clumps of feathers I looked down in my hand to find some long mottled tan feathers with rounded tips from the area under the wings. They run up to about two inches of useable feather beyond the fluffy stuff near the base. I tied up a size eight matuka with some of them after I got done butchering and cleaning up. I think you could use them on up to a size four long shanked hook.
