    Default Mayhem Mayfly Emerger SBS

Mayhem? Carnage? I thought this was supposed to be the "Quiet Sport". Tied here as a baetis; change colors to suit your needs

    hook - Dai Riki 305 #18
    thread - Danville 6/0 olive
    shuck - Congo Hair dun
    rib - x-small wire silver
    abdomen - tying thread
    shellback - 1mm foam grey
    thorax - peacock herl
    legs - hen hackle dun

    Part 1

mash barb, start thread a bit past the 1/2 mark; tie in CH

fold back, tie in rib, wrap everything back to point above barb; return thread to tie-in

rib abdomen, helicopter end, cover with thread; trim shuck (gap width past bend)

tie in foam strip (gap width)

    tie in peacock herl

twist herl around thread and wrap thorax

    prep hackle

    Bruce,

Thanks. Forgot to mention I used the shorter shank DR 305 to get the gap of an #18 on the shank length of a standard #20 hook. I guess I could have also used a true emerger hook like the DR 125 to get the wider gap, which I'll do on anything smaller.

    Regards,
    Scott

One on my favorite patterns here in Colorado. Especially in the Roaring Fork Valley. I tie it in Gray or Black, mostly on the Mustad 3906 hook in size 18-20, or for a longer version, the Mustad 9671 in size 18. I have used scud hooks in size 20 as well. I think I will go back to adding the hen hackle for wing/gills. Great work Scott.

    Dub:

So is this a nymph or more of an emerger/cripple to be fished in the film? Is that packing foam you are using for the wingcase?

    Thanks.

I fish it at any depth of the water column. From bottom to just under the surface. I usually fish the emerger with a Soft Hackle or Two. Scott has the pattern dialed in perfectly for how it should be tied.

This is the foam I use.
