    Default Hooks for Midges

    Hey folks. I need to choose a midge to tie for the beginner's only swap (the last month!!) and figured I'd tie with some midge larva lace and a little dubbing on a #20 hook. Then I realized the only small hooks I had were Cabelas 01 hooks. These are dry fly hooks. So which hooks are best for these little larva midges or can I just use these?

    Thanks

    Depending on how small the larva laceis, I should be able to use the dry fly hooks. But if it is a larger size, it may not give you the proportions you are looking for.

    With that said, I tie many of my midge patterns on dry fly style hooks. You could also use a TMC 200R style hook or the Daichi 1270 hook. These style of hooks have a longer shank with a slight bend. When I tie midge larva, I use this style of hook, as it allows me to tie a slim and long body. The link below shows a photo of a red larva tied on a Daichi 1270 hook.

    The next link shows a midge pupa tied on a dry fly hook.

    Hope this helps you in your tying. If you have any other questions, feel free to email.

    Diane... I like the TMC101 for my midges for the straight eye or the TMC2488 for the curved shank flies.

    Thanks, Jeremy, Patrick, and tyflier. That's just what I needed to know. And Jeremy, thanks for that great series on midges. Fantastic!

    Tyflier;
    You just named the hooks I tie with! The exception being the TMC 2487 because I didn't exactly know what it was. Now thanks to you I know. Unfortunatly I just, 30 min ago, placed an order with H & H sans the 2487!!
