Default Tying a San Juan Worm

just want to know how some people tye's theirs...

what size (lenght)of the chenille vs hook size...

For example: if you tied one on size #16 scud hook... how long would you make the body of the worm??

I've seen short ones 1/2-1in.. and Ive seen them about 2- 2 1/2in long...

I have some in size 20/22 using micro chenille up to size 10 brain piercer. Various lengths and colors. Keep in mind that if you tie them too long, you can simply clip the length on the river. I'd say my most common SJW's are a size 14 or 16, with the lengths extending about one gape length on each end.

The ones I use most are on #12 scud hooks, and are about 1 1/4" long.

I fish the San Juan river quite a bit and this is what I use....Hook: TMC #2457 size #14 or #16, Ultra chennile or chamois. Never over an inch long. Burnt orange, red, and natural brown (worm color)...Usually fish other types of lies but when I do fish a SJ worm this is what I use. The chamois has been the best over all.

    Hope this helps.

John, chamois works grea, I think, because it is treated with cod liver oil, thus making it bait. Seriously, if you can smell it, think how the fish can.

Several different shades of red/orange/brown microchinelle on a #14-18 scud hook. I singe both ends of the chinelle. One inch seems to work.

    Leonard -

I tie a "San Juan Variation" for the Bluegill here in North Texas (not a ton of trout fishing here).

I use size 10 - 12 TMC 2488H and only tie in the micro chenille to extend past the bend of the hook just a bit less than the width fo the gape. Then I dub a little Super Brite in the thorax area and whip the head.

I have also tied it with the chenille extending equally beyond the bend and the eye with the dubbing in the middle of the hookshank resembling the clitellum.
