Thread: Photographing Flies

    Default Photographing Flies

I just started a fly tying page on my site. The first content I put up there is a reworked and re-photographed article that ran in Fly Tyer in 2000. It will take you through the construction and use of a lighting apparatus I call the Fly Studio. It's a very easy way to take high quality macro shots with a single light source.

I've been trying to photogarph flies and I have been having a difficult time with the lighting. Your photogarphy setup looks wonderful and the results are spectacular.

I'll be trying this out soon. Thanks.

Fantastic Paul, just what I needed, really good info on fly photo lighting.
This would make an excellent article here on FAOL.

    Paul:

Well done.... I have a fly studio that I use but I think I might just take your idea and use most of it. I also use mirrors but I use inspection mirrors that are attached to my base. I was kicking arount the idea of a light tent, but like the tube much better. Where did you find the tube? I understand the sanding, What diameter was the tube? I must have missed it in the article.
Great article, I agree it should become one of the FAOL articles.

    120wt flood bulb

We have a plasstic store in Seattle called Tap Plastics I got the 6" tube and mirrors there. The tube was a couple bucks an inch (ouch) but you should keep it around 4"; I made mine 6" and will be cutting it down. The shorter tube allows for more obtuse angles of lighting which can be really helpful.

thanks guys this is helpful in getting me to see the holes inthe article.

Be sure and read the copy in the photo galleries...it has some of this.

    Have fun

Paul, nice tutorial. I will try this myself.
Have you tried the Fly Studio on rod thread art? The glare off the epoxy is a killer!
