Thread: Apple Caddis - Korns Spent-wing Caddis pattern

Default Apple Caddis - Korns Spent-wing Caddis pattern

Hi folks - it's been a while since I posted a fly. But today, after tying up a bunch of flies for Parks Fly Shop, I had some time to tie a few Apple Caddis for my local waters. This fly is especally good on the West Branch of the Delaware River where these flies hatch in abundance. See my "Korn's Spruce Moth" video on YouTube for tying and fishing instructions, then just switch up the materials for the caddis on your streams.

    Materials list:
    #14 & 16 Dry Fly Hooks (this is a #16)
    Olive thread
    Butt section: Chartreuse GSS dubbing
    Mid/Thorax section: Tan dubbing
Wings: Two Pheasant wing feathers, stacked and then folded back over for the head.
    Legs: Red Fox Squirrel dubbing

    Doug,

Nice fly. I bet that would work as an egg-laying hydropsyche on western waters (I'm thinking specifically the Madison in the summer); I'd keep the green butt, just maybe a bit shorter.

    Regards,
    Scott

    Doug,

May try it with a wing of sharptail breast feathers, too.

I'm going to go watch that video. This one looks too good to let slip by.

Cool fly! I'm a sucker for another nice Caddis pattern. Fits my "style" - aka - the messier the better! *G*

Scott - I've tied it with Partridge, Chicken hen feathers, Pheasant hen feathers and even Chick-a-bou...... Sharp-tail should work too.....

Jeremy - that vid will show you how to tie my spruce moth..... I tie the my caddis patterns the same way..... But with this Apple Caddis I left out the hackle and used a squirrel dubbing collar for the legs instead...... The main reason I referenced the video was to show how I do the wings and head.....

Yep, I got that Doug. Thank you. After my post I went immediately and watched your video and got what you described. Nice touch there!

What I liked about your post and pics. above are those last two pics showing the wings. So important to the Caddis flies. It'll be something I'll shoot for in my ties. Love that "delta wing" look on these guys! I have trouble with that.

    Jeremy.
