Thumbs down Is my thinking blurred?

Some of my buddies claim that using imitation jungle cock, such as Ti-Rite, for streamers is totally unacceptable. Now, I'd like to present my argument. To me these printed plastic guys look a lot more like real jungle cock than the real jungle cock look like the side of a minnow. If a genuine jungle cock, as poor as it is, is an acceptable substitute for a real minnow from a trout's viewpoint it seems that a printed plastic guy would be just as good. I'm not talking abut making museum quality copies of classic patterns and therefore can't buy their story.

Unacceptable to who? Them? They're probably out shaving a ram's undercariage for proper Tups Indespensible dubbing or flipping over vixen foxes to see if they're incontinent. so they could score proper Hendrickson dubbing. As in everything fly-tying related, unless you're trying to sell flies or are tying in competition, you are free to tie however you like, using whatever materials you enjoy using.

Don't ask us, ask the fish. Their opinion is all that matters.

    Ray,

Tie some up with the imitation jungle cock, take them with you when you go fishing, catch some fish, take pictures of the fish, then show the pictures to your buddies. As they say, a picture is worth a thousand words.

I have probably posted it here before, but the best advice I ever got about fly tying was "You're trying to make a fly that looks like something a fish would eat, not some other guy's fly."

Try it and see is probably the best answer but I will point out that plastic eyes will not pulse and move like real feathers when fished. Considering that they represent a small portion of the fly this may not be important but it is one reason (besides being a tightwad) that I use starling as a jungle cock substitute.
I can think of few acts more selfish than refusing a vaccination.
