Dubbing with permanent marker

I'm thinking about using a Sharpie permanent marker to color my dubbing instead of buying different colors. Any thoughts/precautions on this?

I'm not sure how you would get a consistent color on the material. Perhaps you could try using the Kool-Aid method and dye the material?

I've tried it but didn't have much success keeping the marking color on the dubbing. Maybe it was the material I used but...!? Take care & ...

dubbing's pretty cheap, so why bother? unless you're trying to get a segmented look? there are other ways to achieve that.

I like to achieve different effects by blended different colors and different materials into my dubbing blends. That would be completely lost using markers. Dubbing is cheaper than permanent markers, so what would be the point? Plus it would be a pain to mark every fly body.

I use markers a fair amount of time but I agree with Al on this one ...... almost impossible to achieve a good finish with markers on dubbing.

Might you mean using the marker to
color the thread so you don't need to
carry many different spools of different thread colors?

Some tyers use only white thread with
various waterproof color markers.

Kinda nice if you change thread color
while tying the same fly.

Sorry if I am second guessing here!
Just dose not sound like it would
work very well for dubbing.
