Default Grey Runt Nymph (variation) SBS

Original is tied with dark grey dubbing for the thorax; with the aftershaft fibers co-mingling with the grizzly hackle, it kinda morphed into an Adams softhackle. Weighted underbody optional.

    hook - Dai Riki 280 #10
    underbody - non-tox .025 (optional)
    thread - Danville 6/0 black
    tail - goose biots natural
    abdomen - muskrat
    thorax - pheasant aftershaft
    hackle - hen grizzly

    Part 1

mash barb, wrap shank with non-tox; cover with thread

even tips on a pair of biots (convex opposed); measure (gap width past bend), tie in/trim butts, smooth with thread

    dub thread/dub abdomen

    tie in hackle by tip

create dubbing loop, insert aftershaft, spin

Nice tie and interesting modification, Scott. Hellekson has this recipe, but no mention of the originator. Looks like an oldish pattern. Any idea of the history? Many of the old guard use to carry an innocuous gray nymph as their ace in the hole, and I've been meaning to add a few to my box to see if I can replicate those past successes, and this looks like a nice starting point.

I like it - heavily weighted plus a quick tie are a great combination. This one is getting added to my fly box.

    John,

I pulled it from Hellekson's book so I don't have any history on it; he didn't have a pic either so this is just a guestimate.

Thanks, Scott. A pity Terry wasn't a more precise chronicler.
