Darn good looking tie, Scott. I do not see that foam lip lasting very long, however. Might work better doubled over or maybe with 4mm foam instead. Never seen this pattern before, but a very good looking skater.

    John,

Thanks. Agree on the lip - I was afraid that doubling it over would make the tying area too thick to spin the collar, but I've decided to re-try that part with deer hair in a dubbing loop so it really won't matter. Should also make it look a bit buggier; back to the vise.

As whatfly mentioned, the lip seemed a bit wimpy, but doubled foam would increase shank diameter and make it a bit difficult for me to spin the collar so I opted for a dubbing loop. First steps are identical so we'll skip to the point where the body's spun/trimmed

taper doubled foam strip; tie in/trim

    create dubbing loop

clean, stack, measure (tips to hook point) a clump of deer hair; insert in clip

insert clip in loop, let thread capture hair butts and release clip

twist loop, creating deer hair "hackle"

    stroke fibers back

wrap, leave butts untrimmed for buggier look, whip, SHHAN

Trimmed out the undercarriage to ensure a smooth water landing
