    Default quill wings, o.k.?

Not my strong suit by any means. I've tried a few upright quill slip wings, one looks o.k.? I think.
Darn things are a pain in the...

I think I'll stick to tying hair or flank wings, way easier. -Yaf

I think they look good, far better than my few feeble attempts at quill wings. How do you get them to stand up evenly? Is there a trick? I can't seem to do it

SlamminSalmon, I'm still scratching the ol noggin in wonderment. There are guys on the board a lot more qualified to explain how to tie the wings in. This was a fluke for me, an experiment, I have only tied a couple of them.

The amazement was getting the wings to stay in one piece, the other attempts look like a trout had shreaded the wings before the fly came from the vise. -Yaf

    Hi Yaffle,

Good job! I think they look great! Do you coat the quill with anything before tying on the wings? Just curious. Take care & ...

Hi Al, no, I didn't coat the wing with anything, but as I said, this is the only one that turned out with wings in tact. -Yaf

    Yaffle,

Nice work. It looks almost too nice to fish.

I would save that one and use it as a standard for future efforts with quill wings like the suggestion in the tying tips section on this website.

    Rangerman,
Nice idea. I haven't fished it, and don't plan too, only because I know it's a one fish fly and like to have my flies hang around to be munched on another day.

I'll probably tie some similar (Black Quills), but with Teal or Mallard flank for wings. -Yaf

Yaf...nice fly and the wings look great! To me, there isnt a prettier thing than quill slip wing, wet or dry. Just curious, you said that alot of the attempts ended up with tattered and torn results. Did they self destruct as you were tying them in or standing them up?....Jason

I only tried two or three total before this attempt.
I have quills that are dyed black and I have natural quills that are a dark grey (lead wing). The dyed quill slips seem to split apart as I was standing them upright.
I settled for the natural lead wing, and it was the only one I tied.
The original intent was to tie everything very black and use them for fishing, but as tyflier pointed out, way too much effort involved (for me at least) to fish this pattern and I'll be using a substitute for wings in the fishing fly. -Yaf
