Thread: Recommendations for wide gap hook?

  1. #1

Default Recommendations for wide gap hook?

I fish a lot of foam hopper patterns, Charlie boy hopper is one of them. Sometimes I feel like the foam fills up too much of that hook gap and I miss/lose fish because of it.

Any suggestions on good dry fly hooks with a wider hook gap that would be ideal of these patterns?

I tie a lot of my hoppers on Dai Riki 280's; don't have much problem with the gap being too shallow with them. On real small hoppers, I'll often use a scud hook like a Dai Riki 135.

I like the Daiichi 1260 personally. A tad bit more open than the standard curved shank hooks. I believe its the sae hook as the Orvis Beadhead hook?

    1hook,
It is just for THAT reason I shy away from foam patterns. No remdy except to use a gaf size hook.

Here's Charlie Craven's BC Hopper tied on a #10 Dai Riki 280; plenty of room between body and point

This modified Rogue Hopper is tied on a #12 scud hook; it would be easy enough to go down to a #14 and still have sufficient gap.

Well, I guess if you really wanted to go to town, you could try something like a Tiemco TMC8089 which is made as small as #12. As Marco pointed out, it is a perennial problem with foam patterns.

I've been tying my Foam Butt Caddis this year on a #10 Stinger hook. Works like a charm.
