    Default Material substitution?

    Hello all.

Last year, I tied up a batch of size 14 Martinez Nymphs. Mostly because I had everything I needed for the pattern, and I thought they looked nice. I haven't really fished them, but did swap several of them to a buddy for some duck feathers.

Today, I met up with my buddy. We got to talking flies and jigs, fishing, etc. He got his fly box out to show me what had been working for him in the past year. I noticed that on the Martinez nymphs that I had tied for him, the chartreuse neck hackle fibers that I had used for the wingcase had faded.

My buddy says those bugs worked pretty good for him, so I'm planning on tying up some more, in prep for the coming Duck Season. However, I would like to use a material that won't fade so easily on me.

I'm thinking something synthetic would be best. Chartreuse Flashabou? Edge Bright (I know that won't really show nice, but it's an option)? Or should I go with something like Swiss Straw?

I used dyed goose quill segments brushed with a little head cement (thinned Goop would work, too); seem to hold up pretty well

I would think that any of the synthetic fibers in that color would hold up well. It looks like you could also use deer hair with a coat of goop would work okay as well. Just a couple of options.

Goose, turkey flat or yellow bugskin would all work well.

Want something for the wingcase that will add a "different" action to the nymph, in chartreuse? Try this:

    ...trust me, it works:

Thanks for the replies, gents! Now that I think about it, I do have some dyed goose feathers.
