Thread caught in eye of hook

I occasionally get the thread caught in the hook eye with the resulting problem(s).

I have tried a thread "dam" right behind the eye, but that makes for a big head on the finished fly. Have tried closing the eye with a pliers etc.

Anyone found other ways to prevent the thread from slipping into the eye?

That rarely happens to me . What brand hooks are you using ?

Not pulling towards the eye as you wrap? The thread should be perpendicular to the hook shaft as you wrap. If your doing that then I'd also like to know what brand of hooks your using. If there is a noticeable gap that you can close with pliers maybe you need better hooks.

I used to have this problem, then swithed to better hooks. I like Tiemco and Di-Rikki brands. Less expensive hooks sometimes don't have completly closed eyes and as a result the thread can slip into the hook eye. Even worse, the leader can get cut by the sharp edges of the gap and you might loose a fish.

I finally decided that paying a little more for hooks was a good investment.

Throw the hook away and don't buy that brand again.

I am using, when this happens, Mustad hooks.

I do try to keep everything perpendicular, but once in awhile it slips under with the thread either getting nicked or breaking.

Doesn't happen too often but enough to become an irritant.

I knew you were going to say mustad as soon as I read the first post. I do the same thing. With my steady hands there are a lot of people happy I didn't become a surgeon or diamond cutter. It happens mostly when I use the bobbin rest.

Love this place, same problem, same hook!! Stopped using the rest.

Same thing here. I think mine are quite old though (worse quality control?), so I'm not ditching the company. I have other hooks by them that are just fine.
The hooks are supposed to be 94840 in size 14, but they look slightly long shanked and the points are short.
