Thread: Cal Bird's official recipe??

    Default Cal Bird's official recipe??

Cal Bird's "Birds Nest" nymph is a rather simple pattern (and that's a good thing *g*) requiring essentially 2 materials: feather barbs and dubbing. The feather fibers used for legs are tied in at the thorax, or at least far enough back from the eye as to allow for a bit of additional dubbing between the tie in area and the eye.

As far as Cal's recipe goes, how far up the shank (assuming one dubs the shank starting at the rear) does he suggest dubbing the body before tying in the feather barbs??

(Yes, I know the fish "don't care",... I am simply curious as I plan to tie a bunch in size 12.)

    Thanks.

    Peter

Hi-a while back I did a search on that pattern and actually found a video feed showing exactly how to tie the fly step-by-step. I can suggest a careful search using google.

Hi Peter; A step by step recipe is in F.A.O.L. Fly Of The Week Archives. Jax

Thanks, Jax. I see Skip Morris' rendition on FAOL, calling for dubbing 2/3 of the body first, applying legs, and then dubbing the front 1/3. Makes sense to me.

Another source with instructions is Harry Mason's (aka bones) site troutflies.com. Here is the tutorial link to the Birds Nest. [url=http://www.troutflies.com/tutorials/nest/index.shtml:29eb9]http://www.troutflies.com/tutorials/nest/index.shtml[/url:29eb9]
