    Joe,

My tying friend Aileen Nishimura Lane ties this Rene Harrop pattern for waters in So. Idaho. She has had a lot of success with it:

    Joe,

here's a nice vid from Blue Ribbon
    http://www.blue-ribbon-flies.com/how-to/split_case_pmd/

Neat fly, although I cringe when watching folks use their good scissors to cut wire; also the fly's a bit involved (8 minutes for a professional tyer).

PT, that's a cool fly; thanks for the link.

    Regards,
    Scott

    Joe,

I tie this version for Baetis/BWO's. Just change out the colors for a PMD...

    SPLIT WING CASE BAETIS NYMPH
    HOOK: Daiichi 1130, #16-#22, TMC 2487, Mustad C49S
THREAD: Gordon Griffith 14/0 Sheer, Olive or Gray
    TAIL: Lemon Wood Duck
ABDOMEN: Goose Biot, BWO, Olive or Natural
    RIB: Lagartun Gold x-fine wire

THORAX: Wapsi Beaver Dubbing, Dark Tan
    LEGS: Lemon Wood Duck

UNDER WING CASE: Wapsi Razor Foam,Translucent Dun, 1mm
OVER WING CASE: Spirit River, Black Holographic Mylar Motion 1/64", 3 strands each side, tied at sides and pulled over the foam...this is tricky, patience prevails. One can also touch up the wing case with a dab of UV resin (Silver Creek offers a good one)

HERE is another, interesting version from Greg Vinci (C & P):

You can make these things waaaaayyyy simpler than the stock pattern. Just a tail of whatever game bird feather (partridge, etc.), body of spandex wrapped under tension, slender wing case of either yellow holo tinsel or yellow poly, and buggy thorax of dark dubbing that will "pooch" up some when you pull the wingcase tight. So really a "skinny case" instead of a split case, with the thorax bulk taking some of the place of the biots. Also effective in purple...
