Default The cost of fly fishing

So I'm looking through the cabelas magazine that I got in the mail today and my jaw dropped at some of the prices of things.. This is what I found

    $1350 fly rod
    $595 reel
    $159 fly line
    $30 line nippers
    $150 wading staff
    $665 tying vise
    $139 tying light
    $189 chest pack
    $300 sun glasses
    $299 rain jacket
    $799 waders
    $200 wading boots
    $499 "rod vault"

Obviously those are extremes but it blows my mind what certain companies ask for stuff. Maybe all that's worth every penny and if I had a ton of money I'd probably buy some of it. Just seems if you attach fly fishing to something the price goes up... $30 line clippers... You can go to dollar store and get 30 of them.

By the same token, you're looking at the Lamborghinis and Guccis and diamond rings of the fly fishing world. There are plenty of perfectly usable Kias and Levis and beaded necklaces you buy at the craft show that work just fine.

I have several rods now including names like TFO and my favorite rod, the one I feel most comfortable with is still the BPS 6wt outfit I bought to get into fly fishing several years ago For $120.
Separate your observations from your preconceptions. See what is, not what you expect.

Oh I agree, I just cant wrap my mind around what makes a pair of waders worth 799. The waders I have now are over 5 years old and I have beat the crap out of them. They still work fine and I think they set me back around 150 bucks.

Heck my first truck cost me 500 bucks...

Don't have to get the newest, neatest, cutest to impress folks you don't even know. My spousal unit says I'm cheap. I prefer the word frugal.
