try leaving it as "red ***". the fly known as a "red ***" is a soft hackle. "soft hackle" is generally not in the title.
Its basically a soft hackle with the abdomen made of red thread and the thorax peacock herl. Both standard and bead-head versions are popular.
Try looking for a "Red *** Kelso" That I believe is the original pattern. Ron
check this out, I usually put about half the herl and more red thread.

Is that "Drew Kelso"?

Hope this helps you. The Red *** and other soft hackles are my favorite patterns to tie.

That fly pattern sounds a little too sadistic, or is it masochistic, for my taste.

Fly Tying, an addiction in learning, Love it.
I look into... my fly box, and think about all the elements I should consider in choosing the perfect fly: water temperature, what stage of development the bugs are in, what the fish are eating right now. Then I remember what a guide told me: 'Ninety percent of what a trout eats is brown and fuzzy and about five-eighths of an inch long.' - Allison Moir.
Excuse my spelling and grammar, I hooked Mondays and Fridays to either fish or hunt.
