    Thanks gang,

I call this fly my "Ultimate Suede Crab". The legs and pinchers are made out of tan suede strips knotted and cut to shape. I typically will sit down watching TV and tie knots spaced about 1cm apart in an entire 6ft length of suede then cut the long strip into 4 knot sections.

The crab carapace is made out of epoxy coated craft foam sheeting. The foam gives the crabs body bouyancy so that it rises off the bottom resting on dumbell eyes tied in at the hook eye...give a realistic defensive crab look.

    Henry,

Awesome crabs!! Great job. I was trying to figure out what to use on my Blue Max Crabs
side legs, and your Suede strip is the ticket. Is the Suede a lacing, or did you cut it from Suede sheet material?

    Again, great tying.

    Hey Tony,

I suppose you could call the suede I use lacing. I buy it wound on cards in the craft supplies section of a local fabric store. I'm planning on finding a good used clothing store and picking up a ratty old suede jacket for a couple bucks and then cutting my own strips for cheap. A great way to cut them is to bolt a number of utility razor blades together with washers in between for spacing...then you can cut like 10 equal strips at a time.

    Henry,

great idea with the blades. Found some suede lacing at Wally World, .75 yard. It comes in tan and dark brown. I use Tulip fabric paint on top of my Blue Max Crab and paint it with nail polish. Then a coat of hard as nails. You can give the crab a bumpy coating with Fabric paint.

For the suede, go to your local Joanne's fabric store and find "ultra suede." Its a synthetic suede used in making jackets an such.
You can buy as little as an eighth of a yard in assorted colors.
One thing I use it for is to cut out a little fish pattern, paint some gills and an eye on it, tie it to the hook by the nose and voila, instant wounded baitfish.
I use it when I see baitfish jumping on the surface. The bass, trout, or stripers can't resist a wounded one floating on the surface.
