The Wooly Bugger is found in a million differing patterns throughout the fly fishing world. Why? It works. Here are the 2 basic versions that I currently tie and fish locally. Experiment on your waters.

    The Wooly Bugger Recipe

    Hook: Standard 3XL #8
    Thread: Black
    Tail: Marabou Tips
    Weight: 015 Lead Wire Shank-length
    Abdomen: Orvis Wooly Bugger Chenille
    Hackle: Dry Speckled Badger

nice site. I was taught to "snap" off a portion at the end of the marabou tail against an edge of a scissor before tying onto the hook. I believe the intent is to give the bugger tail more action. Anyone else do this?

I was taught just the opposite and have seen a number of "guru's" not wanting to do that. They do not use stiff ended marabou.

Nope, just the opposite. I never trim the ends of marabou.

Nor I, although it is fairly common, if somewhat wrong-headed to me.

If I need to modify the marabou after I tie it in I pinch it between my fingers and tear it off to the desired length, doing it this way will prevent the squared off look you get when you cut it with scissors

Another neat way to tie a bugger is to use marabou for the tail then tie in a cross-cut rabbit strip and wrap it to the eye or bead, conehead, etc. It looks like a big hairball when finished but when it gets wet it slims down and has a ton of movement in the water
