Default The Jenny Lind, as a lake fly and a wet fly

I tied the lake fly as a request from a close friend, I liked the color combination so much I ended up tying 3 more as wet flies for my own fly box.

    Tag: oval silver tinsel
Tail: blue goose shoulder slips, narrow
Body: yellow floss ribbed with silver oval tinsel
    Wing: blue goose shoulder slips
    Collar: red rooster hackle
    Head: red thread

First is the lake fly, this is tied on a blind-eye hook. I used monofilament for the snell. For snelled flies I don't use my tapered blind-eye hooks since I like to run the mono almost down to the bend. This is to better secure it and also to give me a smooth underbody to wrap the floss and tinsel:

Next is the wet fly, this one is tied on a Mustad 3906B, size 6 hook.

    Enjoy,

    Alberto

    Alberto,

I've only seen the wet version tied with throat hackle; the full collar is a neat variation. Both flies are very nice, as always.

    Scott,

Thanks, although most classic wets do have throat hackles, the ones I tie for my fly boxes end up with hackle collars. I like the way they look over throat hackles. I also like the way the collar transitions into the thread head, finishing the fly in a way that appeals to me.

    Regards,

    Alberto

    Alberto,

It's a beautiful effect. Do you fold your hackle before wrapping?

Yes, it's a technique similar to yours. Tied in by the tip, concave side of feather facing towards me, then I fold the hackle backwards and wrap the the eye. I think you tie your collars with the convex side facing out, right?

    Alberto,

I do tie convex side out. Before I wrap the hackle, I'll run my scissors blade down the feather (from tip to butt) on each side of the quill - best way I've found to fold it, although it took a few stripped feathers to get the blade angle right.

    Regards,
    Scott
