    Default A new tyer

A really neat thing happened last night while I was tying up some irresistibles for a swap I'm in. My daughter decided she wanted to watch and I don't mind an audience. After I finished one she inspected it and gave her "that looks pretty cool dad" seal of approval. Some how I knew what was coming next, "can I tie one dad". Now I have only been tying for about 8 months and I'm not much of an instructor, but, I knew spinning dear hair is not what you start a 7 year old off with. I talked her into tying a pom pom bug with rubber legs.
I wish I had a camera handy, the look of concentration on her face was priceless. When she was finished she was so proud of herself she just had to show everyone in the house, even the dogs. I'm not sure what kind of fish is going to bite on a pink and purple pom pom bug but we will find out in the spring. For now I have someone else to tie with.

If I could get the digital camera hooked up to the computer I would post a picture.

That's how my 3 daughters got into flytying too. Now they are 13, 11, & 7 years old. Enjoy your new adventure!

Have her tie another one so that you can save the first. Mine all started when they were that age and we have fun showing the first and the latest. The grand kids all have saved their first also.

I agree with the comment about saving that first one...have her make another and toss it at some blue gill. They'll eat about anything that crosses their turf and it'll make her feel on top of the world to catch a fish on her first pattern.

    Congrats!

    ftr00p7,

That is a great story. Glad you have company at the bench. My young daughter's first fly was an all black Deceiver. She tied it follwing along with Lefty's Video.

If you have kids start tying on Tube Flies, there are no hooks to deal with!
