Thread: which deer hair?

    Default which deer hair?

I am trying to tie larger hopper patterns such as madam x that require somewhat longer deer hairs primarily because of the need to roll back the hair for bullet heads. are there certain parts of the same deer that typically have longer hairs than other parts? My other recourse is to size the hook in accordance with the longest hair patch that I'm using. Since flotation is a main criteria, tail hair is probably unsuitable. thanks for your help in advance

This may have more information than your looking for but It's a great guide to deer hair and it's uses for fly tying.

Joe gives good advise; that's a great link. Talk to the folks at Blue Ribbon flyshop - they have a great selection of hair; tell them what you're trying to tie and they'll get you the right stuff. BTW, for bigger bulletheads, elk works great, too, and is readily available in longer lengths.

    Regards,
    Scott
