Default Lamar river valley late July?

Lord willing we'll be at Lamar river valley in Yellowstone late July next year. I've got a couple of questions about the area. Is wet wading an option? This is a family vacation and some of my family don't own waders. What hatches are normally going on and is a 9ft 5wt a good choice?

    As always thanks in advance,
    hNt

PS Our 10 year old is growing so fast we are planning on buying him waders (if he needs them) right before we go. And he'll probably be out grew them before we get back home!!😉

I agree with Scott that Walter at Parks Fly Shop would be a good choice for fly hatches, and up to date info. closer to the time of your trip.

However, I would not recommend wet wading as a sure bet at that time of year in the Lamar. It may be possible for some, but it could still be quite cold, and still experiencing some run-off until mid-to-late July, depending on this winter's snowpack - and we won't know that until next March or April, or so. If it is too high fo wet wading, there are also places to fish from the bank, if required.

A 9' 5 wt Rod will work just fine.

Have some big terrestrials: Chernobyl ants, Fat Alberts, etc.

July is hopper season along with some PMD's and rusty spinners.

Your time frame is VERY IFFY. I work for the USFS just outside the NE entrance (Cooke City, MT area). I think the Lamar Valley area- Soda Butte, Slough, the Lamar ARE NOT a real good bets for Early to Mid July, it depends on how much snow falls on the Beartooth Plateau and the Spring Weather patterns. I'd keep in close contact with Parks Flyshop, and stock up on big dark nymphs, wooley buggers, dark streamers. If you are lucky enough to catch some clearing, we had some folks catching fish using a tandem rig of dark streamers, double tungsten beaded nymphs. I see fishermen every summer who come into our campground in early to mid-July only to sit and watch trees floating in the snow melt down the Clarks Fork of the Yellowstone. We tell people out here that we only have a couple weeks of summer if we are lucky. Personally, I'm fishing lakes as the ice comes even though I prefer streams. The streams in the western part of YNP (Firehole, Madison, Gibbon, etc.) clear a lot earlier and are more dependable at that time of the year.
