Thread: Suggestion for books on bamboo rods

Default Suggestion for books on bamboo rods

I am interested in buying a bamboo rod (hoping wife will approve request), but admittingly know very little about them. Can you recommend books on the subject? In particular, I am wanting to understand what a cane maker looks for when choosing bamboo stock and the process of making a cane rod.

This weekend I am going to my local nursery to buy a couple of bamboo and tell my wife from one of them I hope to be able to build my rod.

There are lots of books on bamboo but few if any would give you the comprehensive overview I think you are looking for. The best source of information is the internet. some places to begin: http://www.bamboorodmaking.com/[/url:d02a2] http://www.thomaspenrose.com/bamboo.htm[/url:d02a2] http://www.canerod.com/rodmakers/index.html[/url:d02a2]

Many of these sites will have links, and I would recomend following them.

What i would recommend, having bought and sold many bamboo rods to graphite fishermen, is to visit a fish-in, or a conclave where bamboo is prominent so you can cast and feel first hand what you are looking at. Many people that fish graphite are disappointed when they first fish bamboo as they cast differently for the most part, and doesnt meet their expectations. I have a very good friend that fishes graphite and he wanted to buy a bamboo rod, which I would have been very happy to build and sell him one, but the rod that he wanted, with his current casting style, would have disappointed him a lot. Bamboo has a much wider range of actions than does graphite. From a fast action like a South Bend 290(what would normally be considered a medium in graphite), to a very slow action like A Hardy Marvel(try to imagine the rod flexing from the tip all the way to the grip during the cast).

If you can visit a dealer or a bamboo rod makers gathering, I think you would get a lot more out of it than you would a book. Keep in mind, the words that are written are great to read, but it is hard to decipher perception from what you perceive is slow to what someone else perceives as slow, and so on. I will give fair warning...bamboo is highly addictive and can dramatically alter you whole fishing experience!!

    Good Luck in your quest!

Thanks for the responses. Your responses convinced me I better do some more research before deciding to buy a bamboo rod. The unfortunate thing for me is that none of the shops in my area carry (special order only) bamboo rods. I am going to ask around at my club to find those who enjoy the cane and see if they would allow me to cast one just to get a feel.

Tyronefly, Where are you geographicly? Dollars to donuts there is at least one bamboo nut not too far away. Ask around in Clarks classic flyrod forum ( see link in above post). Most folks who are into cane would just love the chance to turn someone to the dark side.

    AgMD,

I live in the San Francisco Bay Area. Cupertino, to be exact. I recently joined the Golden gate Angling and Casting Club. I am going to ask around at one of their meetings.
