    Default Cornie's Quill SBS

A Michigan pattern from the late 50's; kind of a quill-bodied Adams, or an Adams-hackled Quill Gordon. Original was tied Catskill-like; I prefer mine with denser hackle. BTW, herefishy had asked me a question about hackling, so I included some pics; please feel free to skip them.

    hook - Dai Riki 320 #12
    thread - Danville 6/0 black
    tail - hackle fibers brown
    abdomen - peacock quill stripped
    wing - mallard flank
    hackle - grizzly/brown

    Part 1

    Mash down barb, start thread

measure mallard (hook length), tie in at 70% mark

trim butts at an angle, cover with thread; wrap back to point above barb

measure a clump of hackle fibers (shank); tie in, trim butts at wing junction to create a smooth transition

tie in stripped peacock, wrap back to tail

wrap peacock forward to 60% mark, tie off, trim; brush with a little Sally

    Part 2

pull wing back, set angle with thread dam in front

    divide, post, lock, repeat

tie hackle in front of wing

first wrap in front of wing

cross over /behind on far side and make second wrap behind wing

third wrap at the back end of the hackling area

    Part 3

fourth wrap between 2 and 3 (splays the fibers - this is good)

fifth wrap (bring hackle forward underneath wing) in front of first

continue wraps forward to 1 hook eye width back from eye; tie off

first wrap of grizzly in front of wing

wiggle the grizzly between hackle wraps and take one behind the wing

fill in gaps with however many wraps you can fit in

tie off, trim, half hitch x 2, SHHAN

    Regards,
    Scott

Beautiful again, Scott. Whoever first thought of putting grizzly and brown hackle together was one smart, innovative tier.
