    Default Cole's Snake River Stonefly SBS



    Howard Cole's wonderwing stonefly. Tied here as a skwala; change color/size to meet your needs.

    hook - Dai Riki 280 #10
    thread - MFC 8/0 brown
    egg sac - 2mm foam black
    abdomen - Fly Rite quill gordon dubbing (makes a nice olivish/brown/yellow)
    underwing - dun saddle wonderwing style
    overwing/indicator - calftail chartreuse
    legs - rubber medium brown
    hackle - brown-dyed grizzly


    Part 1


    Mash down barb, start thread at 2/3 mark and wrap back to bend




    tie in foam strip (1/2 gap width); fold over, brush a little super glue, and tie down tag end








    dub thread, dub body






    prep saddle feathers

    Part 2

    tie feathers in, pull to length; trim butts and cover with thread wraps




    clean, stack, measure (tips extend to egg sac) a clump of calftail; tie in






    tie in hackle




    tie in legs




    wrap hackle behind, between and in front of legs; tie off, trim (hackle, legs and wings), half hitch x 2, SHHAN

    Your photo series of tying different patterns are far superior to any book I have in my library. Beautiful photography, excellent job in tying the flies and great variety of patterns. Thanks for taking the time to share them with us.
