    Default Gabettas' Jimmy Z SBS



    Jackson Hole One Fly winner from 2004; combination of a Lime Trude/Muddler/Turck Tarantula.


    hook - Dai Riki 310 #10
    thread - UTC 140 tan
    tail - calftail red
    rib - x-small wire gold
    abdomen - dubbing chartreuse
    hackle - grizzly (undersize by 2)
    underwing - Angel Hair pearl
    wing - calftail white
    collar - deer hair flaired
    legs - barred rubber tan/black
    head - deer hair spun/clipped


    Part 1


    Mash down barb, start thread at 60% mark; tie in rib and wrap back to point above barb






    clean, stack, measure (gap width past bend) a sparse clump of calftail; tie in, trim butts






    dub thread/dub body






    tie in hackle at front of body; wrap back to bend




    capture tip of hackle with wire; wrap through hackle, helicopter end, tie off, trim hackle tip

    Part 2



    tie in underwing (tips even with bend)




    clean, stack, measure (tips halfway to tail) a clump of calftail; tie in, trim butts






    clean, stack, measure (tips even with back of body) a clump of deer hair; tie in (let it flair but don't let it spin)






    tie in legs




    clean/trim tips from another clump of deer; tie in in front of legs and let it spin; repeat as needed to fill head, then half hitch x 2, SHHAN






    flip fly over, lay razor on hook eye (to establish underside of head) and push straight back

    Beautiful tie, and great photography as always, Scott. I'm curious if you always tie this on a standard length hook? Patterns seems to scream out for a longer shank, perhaps a 2XL like Dai-Riki 280, TMC2312, or the like.

    Technically, yes, since this is the only time I've ever tied the fly. The recipe I had called for the DR 300 and I happened to have some, so that's what I used.

    Going to tie up a bullethead version on the DR 280 to see how that looks.

    Bullethead variation (tied on the DR 280); quicker, easier to tie (and a lot less messy than the spun deer head )















    safer, too - one little slip with a new razor blade and the spun/clipped one quickly became a Hemoglobin Trude
