That was a pretty harrowing account on the river. Glad to hear that you didn't get washed off that boulder. I'm about an hour and a half south of that area but have never fished up there and so am not familiar with the Rivanna. I always carry a wading staff and never wade deeper then maybe a little over belly button depth. Try to stay pretty conscious of where I step as have gotten wet my share of the time. luckily, most of my falls were in shallower water and it was a mis step of footing that caused them. The few places that I do fish now that the knees are getting wobblier are restricted to local smaller streams. Thank goodness you didn't have a worst experience especially with the wife and new born in the hospital. Be careful my friend.
