the 'large ferrule' method of selecting the ferrule is unique to the post Garrison era. a close inspection of the golden era (1930-1955) rods will show that many top makers(FE Thomas, Granger, Payne, Leonard and more) selected a ferrule that would undercut the power fibers. an example: the Fe Thomas I have on the bench now uses a 15/65 butt ferrule and the butt side measures .248 and the mid side measures .238. why this is so is an excellent subject for debate but the result was NOT ferrules breaking off. this does not mean that if the ferrule station measured .250 and you installed a 14/64(.21 ferrule that it was not asking for trouble but a slight undercutting of the stationfrom say .221 to a 14/64 should not have caused any trouble. some concerns i WOULD have would be a station that was not cut reasonably concentric with the blank or if the cane to sation area was not featherd together well. a pic of the ferrule station and some actual numbers would allow us to help sort out the problem so it does not happen again so you can go out an enjoy your new cane rod.
