Those splicing needles are exactly like a nit picker that you can get at a fabric store such as JoAnns or Hobby Lobby. That is the tool we use to make a Shorb loop in furled leaders. Around 2 bucks each.

I have to ask having seen knit pickers aka hook and latch tools at hobby and linen shops, have you ever actualy spliced 20 or 30 lbs dacron backing line before. Ive spliced hundreds of lines and looped them for backing and it takes a much smaller tool than what Ive ever seen at a hobby shop. I will however take another look just in case.
