    Default Generic Question

I don't know if there is a simple answer to this question, but here goes. If you were going to tie some general nymphs what color hackle would you use for the legs and tails? Would you match the color of the nymph?

    Bruce,

You open a whole box of Pandoras with a lead-in like that. If it were me and I were tying generic nymphs, I'd make them Hare's Ears (variation) with Indian hen for the tail & legs.

    Regards,
    Scott

Yes, or at least something close or complementary.

Real question is: Why do you ask?

Well, I had this idea to tie nymphs in colors of the dubbing sold in the Wapsi Squirrel Dubbing Box. The colors range from Light Olive to Dark Brown. I would use the Hare's Ear nymph pattern: tail, body dubbing, wire ribbing, thorax more dubbing, and turkey wing case.

A friend told me 80% of everything a trout eats is 3/8" long and brown and/or gray. Which I thing is mostly true. I would go with that information. Knowing 64% of all statistics are made up on the spot.

Another option is to skip the hackle and just pick out the thorax dubbing a little. For most of my Hare's Ear nymphs, I skip the hackle, loop dub the thorax and pick it out.
