Throw Back Thursday...............Fran Betters' vise
This vise was on Fran Betters' personal tying desk.
The vise stem moves like the old Zuron vises.............At the bottom of the stem, is a ball which is held in place by a plate and this allows the entire vise to be moved around in varying directions........sorta like an old floor gear shift.

Its a very simple elegant design. Perhaps a little rustic in finish but very functional.

Yes, it is quite functional. And, yes, not a thing of beauty, nor a fine pointed set of jaws. But, serves a nostalgic purpose for me as I can tie a fly with the vise Fran Betters once tied on...............
A few years ago, I had the opportunity visit Betters' shop in Wilmington, I hung around all afternoon watching him tie and visiting with him. A very nice man, I enjoyed that visit. How did you happen to obtain his vise? I have hunch there may be a story involved with that.

No, not much of a story, actually. I got it from his wife.
I wish I could have met him. Truly a self-made man.
