    Question Is it heresy?

A group of us were tying Copper Johns when I commented that years ago I would "prefab." several pairs of biots and cement them together to get nice precise separation, and later easily attach them to the hook as a single unit. I'd be attaching them on top of the hook instead along the sides. Wow! what a bunch of raised eyebrows I got. Was I tying hybrid flies, committing heresy or what?
My prefab. deal works well for Prince nymphs also. What say you?

Who cares...they are your flies, tie them the way you want.

The problem is, you're asking the wrong crowd. We don't care if you vary a bit in tying a pattern, don't we all from time to time. The group to ask is the fish, do they care?

At the first fly tying class I ever attended, I probably got the best advice, the instructor said, “You are trying to may a fly look like something a fish eats, not some other guy’s fly.”

I think there is a group/type of people that take tying flies way too seriously.....

The original tie for the Maine Gray Ghost used cheek feathers that were cemented as a unit to aid in production tying. If ol' Carrie could do it and not get pilloried, I think you're O.K., Ray!

    Ray,

Just out of curiosity, do you end up with a different look when the tail of biots is on top versus along the side? How about prefabbing the pair with a flexible cement and then sliding/maneuvering each fiber to the side as you tie in the biot tail?

I've always crossed mine over the top either way. Works well.
