The Stayner Ducktail, my all-time favorite warm water fly. As I've stated before, I've used it successfully for trout in stillwater but have never tried it in streams.

Using the mallard feather whole as the wing: http://flyanglersonline.com/features/lakes/part12.php

    Or bunch the fibers: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HPYOE0GGdSk

Yes, trout flies. Are they used much in warmwater flies such as for smallmouth bass? Like said, I got a big bag of the stuff.

You're right, Ralph. I have a big bag of them in their natural state.

I realize someone spoke on your behalf that you weren't interested in patterns substituting mallard flank, but when I was tying this fly this morning, I thought it might be a pattern you could "substitute" your mallard flank for.
I would have tied it with mallard flank, but didn't immediately find any. So, I used lemon Wood Duck. Mallard Flank would work well also.

A couple nice streamers that can use mallard feathers (as a wood duck substitute) wrapped around the hook to create the body of the fly are the Woodduck Heron and the Woodduck Orange.

The dark feathers are used on a Mallard and Claret, which is a great change of light fly. The white ones can be substituted for teal feathers on things like a teal, blue, and silver, or a Peter Ross (both excellent patterns from way back).

Hi Joe. I tied up a half-dozen Stayner Ducktails. You ever use it for smallmouths? I'm going to tie a few to fish as streamers in trout streams to see if they work.
    Thanks,
    Bruce

    Hi, Bruce.
Don't have much opportunity around here in north central Texas to fish for smallmouths, but for largemouths, bream, and crappie I have never used a more effective fly. I'm sure smallmouths will eat it up, too. I have had better luck tying them with the whole feather used as the wing instead of the bunched fiber wing and putting on a bead head improves it many times, as well. I have no doubt that they will work on trout in streams.
