I don't know the history, but I do know that the Buck Caddis or Bucktail Caddis has been around in the Pacific Northwest for a long time. When I started fly fishing, it could be found in the bins of every flyshop and sporting goods store in the region. I mostly saw it tied in large sizes with either an orange or yellow body to imitate October Caddis. Sometimes it had a tail, sometimes not. Sometimes it had a front collar hackle in addition to the Palmer, sometimes not. I don't know who originated it. Don Harger is a familiar name. I know Polly Rosborough tied a version of it.
