Thread: heavy guides on 5wt?

    Default heavy guides on 5wt?

What would be the disadvantage in using heavy guides on a 5wt? I see that St. Croix changes from light to heavy @ 8wt. I am building a rod for a friend and have an extra set of heavy single foot guides.
    Thanks

There is a 3wt around here that we used over-sized SF guides on with "under" or "double" wraps too. We did figure to abuse this one a bit. It has pestered a 14# steelhead (spent), an 8# halibut, an 8# striper, a 35#+ stingray, and several "slow day" incidentals in Loreto, BSC. We have found no real disadvantage......yet.

There's a disadvantage in putting any extra weight on a rod. That weight will slow down the rod's recovery speed, robbing it of casting power and sensitivity. Always go as light as practically possible.
