Today a reply to a topic on another forum gave me a clue about the possible source of John R.S. Allen's belief that fishing is better at times just before to just after moon rise and moon set, especially at times of a new moon or full moon. This is ancient empirical knowledge from Polynesian or Maori Fishing Calendars and the Solunar theory developed in 1926. They are related but not quite the same.

Of course many thing affect the activity of fish; recent weather, that day's weather, water levels, recent hatches that also vary over the time of the day. But maybe worth some observation to see if your catch rates increase at the predicted times.
