Thread: What am I doing wrong?

Default What am I doing wrong?

Boiling water doesn't seem to be loosening the ferrules. Any help on this?

ps: can carefully applied direct heat be used?

Did you check to see if there was a pin on the ferrule going into the bamboo? Remove by gently punching it so that it is just under the metal (NOT all the way through to the other side). Remove the ferrule then pull the pin out.

If no pin, maybe try the hairdryer next.

I've had to use direct heat before but be careful!

I looked for pins and didn't see any. I just think I have a fight on my hands. Dryer set on high heat I presume and rotate ferrule for even heat distribution?

I have had good luck heating the ferrule over an alcohol lamp and then imersing in ice water. Sometimes I need to repeat once or twice. Caution -- when heating you can build up considerable steam pressure, and when the glue finally lets go --BANG. Only a small dent in the sheetrock, but I am glad it wasn't pointed at the TV. Pins can be all but impossible to see. Try a light buffing w/ 0000 steel wool and a close inspection w/ srtong magnification.

    WARNING WARNING WARNING
Oh yeah, the male end may shoot like a bullet when heated from the heat pressure built up inside.
Thought the whole bamboo exploded when it happened to me. WOW!
Another point to use eye protection even when off water and not fishing.

Be careful, I cooked a bamboo rod using the heat from an alcohol lamp to remove a ferrule.

Turned out I missed the very subtle pin until after I carbonized the cane beneath the male ferrule. It showed up well in the soot.

I think a heat gun might be better....

Thanks guys. Actually had a ferrule off, then got to thinking about what you all said about projectile like missles and went and put the safety glasses on. I started removing the finish with the orange citrus. It appears its going to take a number of applications. When using the 0000 steel wool, can you use a little thinner with it to get any remaining residue or will the thinner hurt the glue in the bamboo?

Hey Rookie, after you put the citrus stripper on, let it sit and work for a while, then apply a second coat and let it sit about 5 minutes. Yes you can use thinner or odorless mineral spirits with the 0000 wool. works like a champ.....
