They literally don't make rods like those old GL3's anymore. I have an 8' three piece GL3 four weight that is a great small stream rod. It is a medium action rod that loads easily but has enough backbone to toss small streamers and nymph rigs.

Try some lava soap on a plain sponge and water and softly wash the cork off then let air dry and see if it brightens up.If ya don't like it I may trade even for the SLI!

Just for info, I used a neat product to clean the corks on a number of my fly rods, Mr. Clean's Magic Eraser. Works great!

    Larry,

WOW! We use those things around the house all the time. They really are like magic the way the work on stuff nothing else will. I'll give them a try tomorrow.

    Thanks to the tip.

    Larry,

Just a note to say thanks for the tip about using the Mr. Clean's magic eraser sponge to clean the cork on the 4 wt. It worked fantastic. I about a minute it looks like new. Great idea!!!

    Thanks for sharing it.

I've had a custom made 7'-6" GL3 in a three-weight for a number of years (actually I broke the tip off a long time ago and it's only 7'-3" now) and it is hands-down my favorite rod ever.

One note to say they don't make em like the gl3 anymore,if.you can locate a discontinued east fork in the fr904-3 that is a nice stiff 4 weight if you can stomach the reel seat color and snake guides unlike Loomis' normal single foot guides.Had one and traded it for the new fr904-2 gl3 I have.Wish I had just bought the gl3 and kept the east fork too.
