Default The hardest thing to do while fishing -

Without a doubt, the hardest thing to do when fishing is to maintain the "pop - pop - rest" rhythm you are using when at the edge of your peripheral vision you see a wake making steady progress towards your little red and white popper. Holding your breath does not help any more than repeating your mentor's mantra (don't set the hook - don't set the hook). I am almost 67 years old and have been fishing since I was 6 and fly-fishing since the 80s and I still have the hardest and best time when a little one pound bank runner bass explodes on a popper in the still of the morning. Experiences like this mornings make fishing and life worthwhile.

Fly fishing and fly tying are two things that I do, and when I am doing them, they are the only 2 things I think about. They clear my mind.

Smoking a cigar, taking a pull of scotch and double hauling can be a bit challenging as well.

One thing that I've experienced with large mouth bass (using poppers), is that species of fish, will explode out of the water and snatch that popper in mid-air before it ever touches the water. It's maybe happened to me five times, and when it does, leaves me "quivering" all over ... and I just have to go and set down for a spell and re-compose myself!

Dale - that has happened to me a few times but when they do that they take the decision away from me as to when if ever to set the hook.
All that being said I would still rather catch 1 on top than 5 from the deep.

having to remember to set the hook upstream on a steelhead. Just setting the hook is sometimes a challenge, after cast after cast of nothing
