Default Quigley Splitsville Caddis variation SBS

Instead of the dubbed abdomen and thread hackle post (ugh), I went with a foam unibody construction; easier (for me) and additional floatation is a plus. This one's a work in progress but has some possibilities; in these colors it makes a passable spruce moth, too.

    thread - UTC 70 tan
    abdomen/hackle post/head - 1mm foam tan
    wing - deer hair bleached
    hackle - barred cream
    thorax - dubbing tan

    Part 1

mash barb; start thread at 70% mark and wrap back to bend

    tie in foam strip

wrap foam forward, tie off; pull foam up and back

tie in hackle at base of post

half hitch thread, flip fly over and attach weighted hackle pliers to foam strip

wrap hackle down post (thorax length), then back to base; tie off hackle

un-invert, smooth thorax back to post with thread

    Part 2

clean, stack, measure (tips to bend) a clump of deer

    tie in, trim butts

    dub thorax

push down/splay wing (aim for an even distribution); pull post up and through wing center, tie down at eye, half hitch x 2, SHHAN

    trim head, go fish

    dorsal

    ventral

    Scott

Excellent, Scott. A forerunner of Craven's Screaming Banshee. I really like the paraloop or hackle stacker style.

Borrowed the back end from John Barr's Graphic Caddis to give the fly a bit more flash.

All ya gotta do is... You make it looks so simple.

That second fly is really, really cool Scott! That's got to be my next.

    Fun stuff indeed.

    Synth Wing variation

Finding the right deer hair for smaller sizes can be a bit of a challenge; polypro yarn (choose your favorite brand) is easy to work with and the fish don't care either way.

Beautiful ties, Scott. On the Barr variation, did you use the tubing as your hackle post, or just wind the hackle up the thread?

Thanks, Jay. I used UTC 140 in cream for the post (I called it the "loop" in the recipe; same thing).
