    Default Goldfish

Wanna feel like a kid again?
    Try fishing for Goldfish!

A friend and I went flyfishing for Goldfish last night. We fished for an hour, and caught 4 each. We finally got 'em figured out and were catching them pretty quickly when we decided to leave and fish for other species elsewhere. They weren't big, but it was challenging and fun...and the fish are so COLORFUL!!

    I
had hits on a #16 Elk Hair Caddis, but one of these little guys actually broke my 6x tippet when I set the hook. So I switched to a #14 Hare's Ear nymph (although I used squirrel for the body and thorax instead), and the fish seemed to like that.

So..... Were you fishing at the bait shop? How did you know about the goldfish? That's kinda cool....

Zach, I can assure you I've caught even SMALLER fish than these over the years...fish that were small enough to catch bait with!

The pond was fairly new 30 years ago when my Grandparents moved into a townhome near it. My cousins, siblings and I fished it once when we were visiting my grandparents and discovered the goldfish in the pond. I've always wondered if the Goldfish were still in there. Now, a friend who started flyfishing earlier this year lives just a couple blocks away from the pond, walks by it with his kids...and he noticed there are a bunch (understatement) of them in there! I don't think there are any other fish species in the pond...its all goldfish.

Brown lining at it's finest. For those of you who don't know that term, it's a compliment.

here in the Washington, D. C., area, there is a stretch of water called 4 Mile Run. beginners like it 'cause it's close to home and unpretentious. the rest of us like it in the depths of winter when the shack nasties hit because the water is open and fishable. amongst the various species recorded lately are bass, carp, pan fish, and goldfish. some of the goldfish are rather large. we figure they were unwanted pets...
fly fishing and baseball share a totally deceptive simplicity; that's why they can both be lifelong pursuits.
