Well they say the 3rd times the charm and I guess there is something to that after all. My 3rd Two Strip Quad aka(PMQ) turned out pretty sweet. The cosmetics are still lack luster but atleast I've developed a taper I can work with. It will be a nice little goggle-eye pole. I paired it with a cheap little pflueger loaded with 1/2 of a DT 6wt cortland 444. Now I can say I can cast the whole line!

No I made this from the ground up, splitting the culm, planing it to .001 tolerance, ect

A standard 4 strip quad blank will not be cheap. You might try asking over at [url=http://p205.ezboard.com/bclarksclassicflyrodforum:e1dd6]The classic Cane Forum[/url:e1dd6]. But a two strip quad is pretty easy to make all you need is some cane (one culm would make over 3 rods), a nice hand plane, calipers, and some basic wood working, and rod building tools.

I would be interested in the instructions for a PMQ. Can you point me in the right direction?

Is there a planning fourm involved in this..???..I KNOW these are not cheap..and the very thing thats kept me from getting into the standard quad blank making..or even 6 strip...If this does not require a planning fourm...would you be willing to share a few things that you've learned of making a Poor Man's Quad.??
Such as taper info..for say a 7 1/2 footer in a 4 or 5 wt.. for example...I've been very interested in specifically the PMQ since hearing of it..But have yet to find anyone willing to share the details...Thanks again,Bill

No planing form is required. I made all of mine on the dining room table, I told my wife it was too cold out in the shop. For tapers I used a linear taper starting between .06-.08 for a tip depending on the size and advanced the taper between .012 and .016 per 5 inches depending on how fast I wanted the rod to be. I loaded all that data into RodDNA and started tweeking it a bit, putting 'hinges" at 10-15" inches from the tip and around midway. It helps to look at stress curves from rods you enjoy casting and trying to tweek the linear taper from there. Ofcourse another option would be just to make a rod with the same taper as an existing hex or standard quad taper, a 2 strip quad will be a little heavier line wt than the original. I got most of my info from the following and just messing around with rods. Don't be disappointed if you first attempt "doesn't work" just take notes and measurement of where it went right and where it failed. Links:

I thought about documenting and photographing the next time I make another rod and submit it to FAOL for the "with bamboo" section, but it will be about a month before I could do this and write a proper article.

Sounds like a great idea...and I'd sure like to get a better grip on weather or not I could actually pull this off...After doing some digging..I definitely have more than a little doubt...
I have built Hex rods from ferruled blanks...but as for the planning and such..I'm not all that great with a plane.

Currently waiting on a reply to an email I sent out to a rod maker a little SE of me...Don't know if he does or would be willing to do a blank..But It sure can't hurt to ask the man...

I'd like to see this in steps detailing the process,Now you have me courious as to weather there might be a video or something out there.....Perhaps more digging!...

    Ty,For the reply,Bill

Bill it's easier than you might think. The idea is to plane two tapered strips, checking every 4 or 6 inches for the correct thickness. Glue the strips together and plane the untapered sides until they measure up.

By setting your plane to remove less than a .001" shaving you can adjust things very slowly.

The hardest part is getting your plane blade really, really sharp. I built my first PMQ over a weekend. The only tools needed are a good hand plane, a dial caliper for measuring thickness and a box of 'binder clips' (giant paper clips from an office supply store) to use as inexpensive clamps.

The 'Planning Form' newsletter had a great step by step article a few years back, they are happy to sell back issues.

There are also several articles on PMQ's at the Bamboo Rodmakers Tips page...
