Thread: Coyote Tail

    Default Coyote Tail

    Hey all,

A friend of mine who gave up on tying handed me two coyote tails. I never turn down free materials, but I'm only in the intermediate phase of tying, so I don't really know of many flies to tie with it. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Tie some foxy clousers with that thing...

Coyote tail can be substituted for anything that uses Arctic Fox.

It also makes for some great dubbing by itself or blended with other materials. Makes some nice buggy bodies.

Fly fishing and fly tying are two things that I do, and when I am doing them, they are the only 2 things I think about. They clear my mind.

    Mike,
Am I correct in assuming I'd cut the fur up into small pieces? Underfur and all?

Sure you can do that or what I like to do personally is to first rake all the underfur out and keep it separate the you can cut up the guard hair and mix them to the underfur depending on how spiky you want the dubbing. I like to blend the underfur with muskrat, possum or raccoon. It's always fun to come up with different blends & colors. Makes great bugger & nymph bodies.

This; coyote Clousers with rootbeer Krystal Flash, are great flies. I also use it to sub for grey fox hair wings on Rat flies
