Another Wolverine State fly, this one from Earl Madsen, who guided on the Au Sable River in the mid-1900s. Pretty straightforward tie until I got to the hackle tip wings; gotta find a better way, maybe tie them in before posting up the deer butts?
hook - TMC 5212 #10
thread - UTC 140 hopper yellow
body - Congo Hair light yellow
rib - DMC floss #815 maroon (apparently, this color is the Secret Sauce to the fly)
underwing/post - deer hair
overwing - grizzly hackle tips
hackle - brown/grizzly mix (oversize by 1)
Part 1
mash barb, start thread at 75% mark
tie in rib and wrap back to point above the barb
tie in a hank of CH (or whatever poly yarn you prefer), return thread to 75% mark
wrap body; rib body
clean, stack, measure (extend tips to hook bend) a clump of deer hair; tie in
wrap some non-tox wire around the wing; post up the butts
