Default WHEN SIMPLE IS BEST - Neil - Feb 21, 2014

    WHEN SIMPLE IS BEST
I have been tying flies for nearly 50 years and I have a room filled with all kinds of fly tying stuff to prove it. I have book shelves that are groaning under the weight of tomes devoted to applying various types of materials to hooks. I have taught fly tying, sold fly tying material, and written about fly tying; in short I have been there and done that.

So, after all that experience, what is your conclusion, and what materials are the ones you use most often?

Have a care, Neil. A slippery slope you are on. Next you may consider omitting the reel. ~Paul

I omit the reel at times. Called Tenkara.
    Now I will hide.

Still have the reel and my flies have hooks with points on them. Not interested in eliminating the catching just interested in making the tying of the flies quicker.

Neil the Chronicler -- I agree that using hooks sans points might tend to eliminate the catching, but I question the conflation of fishing without a reel and eliminating the catching.

    Neil,
Could you please give examples of your quick flies?
    Thanks,
    Byron
    I meant photos.
By the way, I have fished soft hackles a great deal since about the time Syl first re-popularized them.
