Maybe looking at fly tying through the eyes of a trout (or whatever gamefish you're after) would be better? Lee Wulff was an engineer, tied flies for approximately 75 years, and looked at fly tying/fly fishing through the eyes of the trout. His success and his views are well documented and more applicable.
