    Default Lawson's Halfback Emerger SBS

Neat little fly. Craft foam would make a more durable wing pad than the deer hair (see Kelly Glissmeyer's great Halfback Foam Emerger http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DCwVN64SFes ) but this was developed before that stuff was readily available. Tied here in PMD colors; adjust to suit your hatch.

    hook - Dai Riki 320 #18
thread - UTC 70 hopper yellow
    rib - small copper wire
    abdomen - pheasant tail
    shuck/back - Congo Hair brown
    wing case - deer hair
    thorax/head - Superfine dubbing PMD

    Part 1

    mash down barb, attach thread

tie in wire and wrap back to point above barb

tie in a few pheasant tail fibers

wrap forward and tie off at 60% mark

    tie in Congo Hair

pull CH down on top of hook, capture with wire rib; continue ribbing forward, helicopter end and tie off

clean a small clump of deer hair

tie in by butt ends, smooth with thread

    Part 2

dub thread, dub thorax; leave some room at the front

pull deer hair forward, tie off and trim ends

a little more dubbing; half hitch x 2, SHHAN

    trim shuck, fly done

    Regards,
    Scott

Hi Scott. I always enjoy your SBS's. Many of them have inspired me to give them a try. I have been meaning to ask one question though...

How did you smash your left thumb?

Great tie and design. I think I might have added a turn of yellow or light dun cdc ant the front.

My hammer mistook it for a nail when I was removing some wood trim back in October. I originally guessed it would have migrated out by President's Day, but it looks like I undershot by about a month.

Foam back and legs; this variation's a bit more durable and no harder to tie.

Nice, easy ties and they'll both work just fine. Thanks!

    Scott,

Try and keep the thumb spot! As soon as I see it in a SBS, I know I am going to see a very interesting and well tied fly! : )

I'm sure that Sally Hansen has something in an appropriate shade.
    Those flies look great.

Excellent tie and SBS Scott! Thanks for the nod regarding the fomaback emerger. The material I use for a wingcase is electronics packing foam or EPF for short.
