    Default A Nine-Year-Old's Flies

Thought I would post a photo of a young friend's flies, tied for a tying competition. Because they have not been judged and some may know of the contest or even the young lad I will just say he has been tying very sparsely for several years, but he seemed to make huge strides in the last year. he had named the Carrie Stevens style streamer first, "Trout Hunter"... even before he knew what the fly would look like.

His color selections were his own and I think they are awesome, especially Trout Hunter.

The Gurgler colors were chosen when I told him they are usually blue or pink... so he asked if he could do both...

The shoulders on Trout Hunter are impeyan pheasant wing coverts and have a tremendous amount of flash...

If he's looking for something to do, I'll send him an order. Very impressive.

Are you kidding? Wow- a 9 year old! Better than me already and I've only been doing this 40 years. Hope he keeps at it. Future Buz Busick award winner.

He is very talented and fortunate. I would have loved to have had someone point me in the direction of a fly vise when I was 9 or 10, although I cannot imagine I would have turned out anything close to this youngster's flies. Congratulations to both of you.
